Darryl’s obligatory behind-the-scenes story

I never know who the guest is going to be when I sit in the studio, and I don’t ask. I like to be surprised. But this time, when I got into town, Murray texted me and asked what day I was sitting in. When I told him, he said “Oh I’m the guest!” I was thrilled. I like Murray a lot. He’s funny, interesting, and a good sport; a necessity to endure the abuse (for humor!) heaped upon him by Jimmy and others.

Even though we had only hung out in person once before (when I recorded The Pink Floyd Episode of Rock Solid with him) we hit it off and kept in touch by text and phone. When Pat found out Murray was going to be the guest, he said, “Sorry it won’t a be a celebrity!” (See above about Murray-abuse.) I consider Murray a good friend, despite his proclamations that I’m a podcast stalker.

On the show, we talk about how the trains into downtown broke down, but after the concert we were waiting for the train to Santa Monica when the platform attendant got on the loud speaker to tell someone to get off the tracks. After a couple repeated warnings, she said “You are trespassing, and the police have been alerted.” After a bit, a police car pulled onto the tracks at the intersection and coaxed the man off the tracks. Many of us thought we were about to witness a shooting! The platform attendant came back on the speaker: “Thank you officers!” The waiting passengers applauded. Pause. Pause. Attendant on loud speaker again. “Now can you move your patrol car off the tracks?”

And a quick word about Pat: He (and Pilar, and their kids) are so gracious and welcoming. Pat was so supportive about Murray and me being on NNF, which says a lot about him. I always enjoy spending time with Pat and his family (and his cat). Also, and perhaps most importantly, he lives near Barone’s Pizzeria.
