Mostly the distinction is between the two different ‘double-o’ pronunciations, the ‘long oo’ in ‘food’ or the ‘short oo’ in ‘book’. Northern US accents tend toward the long foodish one, Southern accents tend toward the bookish one.” https://www.quora.com/Which-American-English-regional-accent-pronounces-roof-as-ruff#:~:text=’Roof’%20as%20’ruff’%20is%20rare%20although%20I%20don,tend%20toward%20the%20bookish%20one.

The origins of the term “Hobo” cannot be traced. A few suggestions have been put forward. Some say it comes from “Hoe Boy” because many migrant workers traveled with a hoe or other farming tool. Others claim it came from the soldiers returning from the Civil War, who were “Homeward Bound.” Some suggest it is from the congenial greeting “Hello boy” that changed to “Lo boy” and “Lo bo” and finally to “Ho bo.” Others think it came from the word hoosier, meaning a rustic individual, a frontiersman.
