He’s been sober since 1979!

Ed talks about getting sober and the folks who stood with him and the power of having people walk away because of it. He talks about a friend Billy Boyle telling him he wont get sober because he hasn’t lost anything yet. He told him to call him when he’s gonna drink because he’s gonna kick his ass.

Ed called him when he was about to have a drink and Billy said he wasn’t gonna drink because he called him. It hit Ed like bricks.

55 – Ed shares the absolute last time he drank. It was a bottle of wine and he thought someone poisoned it because he felt so bad afterwards. Billy told him he “broke his thermostat” and alcohol is like battery acid now. Ed never drank again.

Ed expected to be famous immediately after he shot My Three Sons. He left the set in makeup expecting to be recognized. They hadn’t even processed the film yet.

1h15m – Jimmy asks more about Ed’s appearances on shows he watched as a kid like Fantasy Island and Love Boat, as well as an episode of Starsky and Hutch that inspired the idea for Love Boat.

His wife went into labor while he was shooting Fantasy Island, years later it happened again on another aaron spelling show: Seventh Heaven. He had to go to the set while she was in labor. He couldn’t get out of it. She had the baby in time for him to rush to the set.

Ed talks about being “many times blessed” with his kids and grandkids.

Chris Guest talk! Jimmy asks how Ed got involved with Chris and his comedies after he had done so many dramas. Ed’s known Chris since 1976!

1h20m – Chris and co put Ed in This Is Spinal Tap, but not Guffman, but then he was put in Best In Show and it rescued him from movie jail.

Meet The Applegates, She-Devil, and Transylvania 6-5000 were the 3 movies that put him in the Hollywood studio dog house.

Strike talks!

1h25m – Ed debunks the idea that he was paying for carwashes for electric cars. The guy who owned the car wash just credited Ed for it. It was all out of pocket. The owner is a good friend of his and he still goes there.

Ed talks about his comedy duo with Michael Richards and the solo comedy tour he did. He was a prop comic and it turns out in big venues, like opening for Poco, no one past the first 10 rows could see the props. He also opened for Loggins and Messina!
